HFDL System Table #48/ 30 Now Current

Yesterday, a discussion on the HFDL Yahoo group produced the intelligence that the frequencies were being changed in bunches. As a result, it was predicted that ARINC would soon change the system table again.

They did.

You know the drill.  Fire up PC-HFDL right now, put it on a loud ground station, and leave it there until the system table is sent to an aircraft.  It is done so in a special message type, and in 5 or 6 data packets.  It is essential to receive all of these.  After this happens, PC-HFDL will magically turn the numbers in the squitters back into frequencies.

The alternative is to get the new PCHFDL.DAT file online.  An earlier post tells how to do this.  Of course, since #47 has now gone the way of several others in the past weeks, that file has been removed from this column's web site.  #48 will be posted whenever I get one that works.

HFDL System Table #43 / 0x002B Is Now Current!

After a long interval with no changes, Aeronautical Radio, Inc (ARINC) has revised the system table used in its High-Frequency Data Link (HFDL) network.

Two updates, numbers 42 and 43, were issued in the space of about one day.  Number 43 (2B in hex) is still current at this time.

The system table is a lookup database of all frequencies used by HFDL stations.  For our use, it is essential in order to change the numbers passed in HFDL "squitters" to the frequencies in use at a given time.  One can look this up manually on a text file or spreadsheet of the system table, but it is far quicker to configure software to do it automatically.

In the case of the most popular program, PC-HFDL, this can be done in two ways.  The first is to get lucky, and have PC-HFDL open when the system passes the new frequencies to aircraft.  This works for the first few days after a change, before the information finally propagates to all users.

The second, and most practical, procedure is to replace the old pchfdl.dat file in the program's runtime directory.  This is done by obtaining the new file from someone who has made the update, usually from web sites or links posted to mailing lists.  Then close PC-HFDL if it's open.  Find the right directory, rename the existing file to oldpchfdl.dat, and copy in the new one as pchfdl.dat.  Then restart PC-HFDL and see if the numbers have changed back to freqs.

The structure of pchfdl.dat is completely bizarre, containing incomprehensible snippets of HFDL decodes.  However, it works - most of the time.

The new file will be added to this column's web site as soon as I can obtain and test it.  This will probably happen around Thursday.  Tomorrow, I'll be on an airplane myself.

COTHEN (Customs Over-The-Horizon Enforcement Network) is an interagency ALE and follow-on voice network used by USCG, ICE, CBP, and several other agencies. Much of the rescue and emergency traffic has migrated there.

Egyptian Crisis On HF

People in Europe are reporting radio transmissions associated with the Egyptian crisis. The ones of most interest to us are the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). The MFA maintains a global network using a couple of teleprinting formats, often in an Arabic alphabet called ATU80.

This network is still active. Traffic is encrypted. A recent hit comes from Ary Boender, who got it from an anonymous listener in Europe. It used ARQ on approximately 9078.7 kHz. The message body was enrypted, but the preamble wasn't. It was clearly a diplomatic cable to Washington, DC, marked URGENT.

Some other known Egyptian MFA frequencies (from the log) are: 5370 6785 7759.7 7815 8022 9035 9067.7 10176.7 11056.7 14923.7 16067.7 16236.7 17434.7 18331.7 18451.7.

HF radio in general appears to be serving as a back-channel communication mode in the absence of Internet and mobile phone circuits (though these are coming back). On Friday, CW comms were reported on several 40 meter amateur frequencies. Two I recall off the top of my head are 7010 and 7076, though the latter is also a JT65A weak signal channel. I do not know if the CW was "real" or some kind of black propaganda diversionary operation.

Egypt has a secured airport that is being used by members of the upper class to flee the country. Bizjets have been heard by Allan Stern on 5517 kHz USB (their local night) and 11300 USB day. It's assumed that, since Murabak is likely holed up at his vacation home nearby, that any flight carrying him out of the country might check in here.

On the broadcast side, Gayle Van Horn has posted a Radio Cairo International schedule here. We also have a warning out from informed radio sources that a US web site purporting to be Radio Cairo is not official and should be ignored.

Don't Forget Night of Nights XI

I can't believe it's been 11 years since the last stations pulled the plugs on commercial Morse telegraphy in the US.

Be that as it may, this infamous anniversary will once again be marked by several large stations spitting dits and dahs defiantly into the Ether as if nothing had changed. All hail to the Martitime Radio Historical Society for taking the point on this important work.

Period equipment will be used on many frequencies, and ships may call on the receiving frequencies (500 kHz and HF calling Channel 3). KKUI, the restored SS American Victory, has announced its plan to work all stations. They most frequently use the 12 MHz frequency of Channel 3, but others are possible.

The fun starts at the exact time Morse went away, or 0001 UTC on the 13th. Reception reports are welcome, and QSL info is here.

For those in the Bay Area, the receiving station on Point Reyes is open for visitors starting 15 minutes ago. Trust me: it's worth the trip. Directions to the receive site are at the same link. GPS is desirable for navigation, if you have it. The place is really out there.

14292 Active w/ Apparent Haiti Activity

Weak signals, can't tell much, and another net uses this frequency, but there has been activity related to the earthquake.

Health and welfare requests are starting to pile up. Internet has answered a few of these, but it's hard to find people.
